Wouldn’t it be great if Wokingham had its own Festival? That’s how it all started, with a local resident who fancied a Bank Holiday festival to rival Reading! Good music, food and beer in a safe and fun environment and Wokingham Festival was born.
Held at Cantley Park and run by a group of local volunteers, Ben, a CLASP member and a member of CLASP staff, saw the Wokingham Music Festival was looking for Volunteers on Facebook. He contacted the organisers who were happy to have him help at the festival held over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
The festival was busy and so was Ben!
Ben helped setup on Friday, on Saturday he was on the entrance gate, giving out entry wristbands and taking payment and helping behind the bar on Saturday evening. Bar work is busy and demanding but fun with the added perk that you can have an occasional beer. Ben was taking payments, pouring beer, serving wine and Pimm's and collecting glasses. The bar was opposite the main stage, so he got to see the acts too. All the volunteers were nice people and Ben enjoyed it, although it was quite hard work.
Sunday volunteering was like Saturday, ticketing and bar work. Ben’s parents came and joined him when he was on a break from his volunteering which was lovely as they had some of the good food that was on offer.
Monday and another new experience, car park assistant, directing people where to park and wearing a high visibility vest. Litter picking and emptying bins were also important jobs that needed to be done. The bar was also very busy, so Ben took the initiative to help them out.
Ben went to the Music Club tent and got chatting to someone about future opportunities and helping with light and sound. This is something he’s interested in and will hopefully be getting involved in this next time they need some extra help. He is also going to volunteer at the Twyford beer festival next year.
Well done Ben, lots of new experiences, new people and great opportunities for the future and all because you took the initiative to follow up on something you saw on Facebook.
